If you’re anything like me, then you suffer from chronic back pain. I am a combination sleeper, and every night I lay down and try to sleep through the dull ache that permeates from my lower back.
I knew I needed a firmer sleep surface, but I love the feel of comfy memory foam. I doubted that I would feel comfortable on a firmer mattress, as I tend to switch from sleeping on my back to my stomach.
I discovered the Eco Terra Mattress and was skeptical, at first, but skepticism quickly faded to optimism then satisfaction. Here is what I found.

Things to Consider Before Buying a New Mattress
Before you start the mattress buying process, you should first consider the reasons why you want to replace your old mattress in the first place.
I was attracted to the Eco Terra mattress because I have learned that hybrid mattresses are one of the best options of combination sleepers like me.
The odds are that the complaints you have with your old mattress are characteristic of your bodies sleep needs.
It’s important to find a mattress that is designed to accommodate your needs, sleep type (the posture you naturally assume when sleeping) any sleep disorders that you regularly suffer.
Sleep Type
Your sleep type determines whether your body needs a soft, medium, or firm mattress. In general, most people assume one of four positions when sleeping; back, stomach, side or combination.
I switch between sleeping on my back and my stomach which makes me a combination sleeper.
After trying out several mattress types, including memory foam, and innerspring I figured I’d give latex a try.
Firmness
As I had suspected, a latex mattress was too firm for me to feel comfortable, even if it was beneficial to my back pain.
I needed a mattress that could combine the support of a firm latex or innerspring mattress with the contour and comfort of memory foam.
I also needed a mattress that would feel as comfortable to me on my back as it was on my stomach.
I eventually discovered the latex hybrid mattress, which effectively combines the best features of latex, innerspring and memory foam mattresses.
The latex hybrid addresses issues with combination sleeping and back pain by providing targeted support and contouring comfort.
Before buying a latex hybrid mattress, you should first consider:
- sleep type (stomach, side, back, or combination)
- desired firmness
- temperature Neutrality
- edge support
- the ratio of contour & support
The Eco Terra Mattress
The comfort system of the Eco Terra mattress includes several features, and two distinct layers that combine to provide superior comfort, and lasting support.
The Eco Terra mattress is available in six different sizes ranging from twin to California King and ranges from $550 or $1,100 depending on size. Every Eco Terra mattress is hand-made in the U.S.A. and available in two firmness options.
Construction & Design
The Eco Terra mattress is a latex hybrid mattress, manufactured with an organic cotton cover, 100% natural Talalay latex and a support core of pocketed steel coils.
Two layers work simultaneously to provide the mattress with contour and support.
The top comfort layer consists of 100% Talalay latex foam which provides pressure relief and allows the body to sink just far enough into the mattress to feel comfortable.
The second layer consists of the pocketed steel coils which provide deep support and prevent the body from sinking unevenly into the mattress.
Each coil is individually pocketed which allows each spring to react independently of the spring next to it.
The result is an innerspring support layer that contours to the shape of the spine and support healthy spinal alignment.
Feel & Performance
I found the Eco Terra mattress to be no more comfortable than comparable hybrid mattresses, such as the Avocado Green Mattress.
However, I did feel significant pressure point relief and found it comfy enough to easily fall asleep and firm enough to support my entire spine.
I was also impressed with the responsiveness of the mattress and the degree to which it contours to the shape of the body.
Most of all I was impressed with its low price tag, which is a fraction of the cost of similar hybrid mattress brands.
Sleep Types & Disorders
The Eco Terra mattress is ideal for sleepers who suffer from chronic back pain, or who tend to switch between sleeping on their back and their stomach.
Though the Eco Terra mattress provides a comfortable and supportive sleep surface for the majority of sleep types, it may be too firm for stomach sleepers less than 150 pounds.
Falling asleep on the Eco Terra is very easy. The organic cotton cover is soft to the touch, and the body sinks just enough to relieve the pressure points in the back.
Unlike some of the other foam hybrids I have reviewed the Eco Terra is responsive, supportive and sleeps cool.
Overall, I found the Eco Terra mattress to be more durable than comparable hybrid mattresses, thanks mostly to the latex incorporated into its design, even though its 90-day sleep trial includes a 30 day break-in period.
Pros
- Ideal for combination sleepers & couples
- Significant edge support
- More durable than comparable hybrid mattress models
- Isolates and dampens motion
- Temperature neutral
Cons
- Tends to produce more noise than latex or foam mattresses
- Requires break-in period
- Lower-than-average overall customer satisfaction
Features & Benefits
The Eco Terra mattress is a hybrid-latex mattress, which means that Every Eco Terra mattress is hand-built, and specially designed with natural latex, innerspring and foam.
Every Eco Terra mattress includes the best features borrowed from latex, innerspring and memory foam mattress designs including:
- A customizable product selection
- Support for healthy spinal alignment.
- A reinforced support core
- Significant pressure point relief
- A conforming, yet responsive sleep surface
The Eco Terra mattress is loaded with features, all of which add to the overall value of the mattress and contribute to the significant amount of pain and pressure relief it provides.
Eco-Friendly
For those looking for an eco-friendly, toxin-free alternative to synthetic mattresses, the Eco Terra mattress is the answer.
The genius of the Eco Terra mattress is in the choice of materials incorporated into its design. The Eco Terra mattress is designed with eco-friendly, sustainably sourced organic cotton and Talalay latex which adds to the soft, yet responsive feel of the mattress.
Organic-Cotton Cover
The organic-cotton cover included with the Eco Terra mattress is the first layer of the mattress that contacts the skin, and one of the most important aspects of the entire mattress.
Organic-cotton is free of synthetic chemicals and is softer to the touch, which improves the Eco Terra mattresses overall quality and provides it with a step up when compared to similar hybrid mattresses.
Natural Talalay Latex
The Eco Terra mattress incorporates all-natural Talalay latex into its design which provides the mattress with some of its best traits.
The 100% plant-derived Talalay latex is processed into a foam which is naturally resistant to mold and dust mites, which was great for my allergies.
Talalay latex is naturally springy and adds responsiveness to the mattress, which is beneficial for sex and makes the Eco Terra a good choice for couples.
The responsiveness of the Talalay latex is also beneficial for sleepers, like me who suffer from painful pressure points.
The springy and responsive surface provides the support your body needs in its most sensitive areas, it also prevents the body from sinking too far into the mattress and causing strain on the spine.
The Eco Terra mattress is also a good choice for combination sleepers too, thanks to its combination of a soft, conforming top layer and the support of a pocket steel spring coil system
Isolated Coils
The Eco Terra mattress was designed to provide targeted support yet remain comfortable to achieve deep, REM sleep.
It does this through a system of pocketed steel springs. The steel coils are independently wrapped in fabric (pocketed) which allows the coils to work independently.
The pocketed coils provide the support the body needs for a good night’s sleep and prevent the mattress from sagging.
The layer of pocketed steel coils below the layer of latex serves to stabilize the body and provide essential support of the spine and promote healthy spinal alignment.
The isolated coil layer improves the mattresses breathability and, according to the manufacturer sleeps nearly 30% cooler than standard memory foam mattresses.
The mattress is available in a variety of coil counts from 682 to 1,280 and contributes to the firmness of the mattress and its size.
Firmness
The firmness of each Eco Terra mattress can vary, and is customizable, though limited to medium and medium-firm models.
Medium Eco Terra models fall between 5-6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, while medium-firm models score between 7-8 out of 10.
It is always important to remember that firmness is subjective, and weight is a significant factor.
Strong Edge Support
Edge support prevents the body from rolling, or sliding off the mattress and makes it easier to get in and out bed.
Typically, foam mattresses do not include a high degree of edge support, but the pocketed steel coil system included in the Eco Terra mattress provides it with a significant amount for edge support.
The Eco Terra latex mattress is engineered with encased coils stretching all the way to the edge of the bed. The full coverage of the coils provides the mattress added support even when sitting on the edge.
Temperature Neutral
When compared to other mattress types, latex mattresses are typically the best at preventing overheating. In contrast, foam mattresses, especially all-foam mattresses tend to overheat and become uncomfortably warm.
Foam mattresses overheat because soft visco-elastic memory foam tends to encapsulate the body in foam, tapping body heat close to the skin.
Latex does not retain heat and is firm enough to prevent the body from sinking too far into the mattress.
The Eco Terra combines the best of latex and memory foam by utilizing a manufacturing process that yields latex foam. Latex foam is springier and more responsive than visco-elastic memory foam and less prone to retaining body heat.
Zero- Risk Sleep Trial & Warranty
Eco Terra includes a zero-risk, money-back guarantee and a 90-night sleep trial. Customers can try out the Eco Terra mattress and return it for a full refund if not satisfied, so long as they ordered it directly from Eco Terra.
Eco Terra does not operate any brick-and-mortar locations, so the mattress is only available online. I ordered mine from Amazon, so it only came with the standard Amazon 30-day money-back guarantee.
The 90-day sleep trial includes a break-in period of 30 days. The break-in period is, in no doubt due to the shipping process.
The Eco Terra mattress is compressed, and rolled for easy shipping and needs to decompress after unpackaging.
Value
Unlike the majority of hybrid mattresses that I have encountered the Eco Terra is very reasonably priced.
The incorporation of famously durable latex into the design of the Eco Terra contributes to the overall value of the mattress, as it can be expected to outlast most other hybrid mattresses.
Most importantly is the Eco Terra’s price tag which, as previously mentioned is a fraction of the cost of comparable hybrid mattresses.

Avocado Green Mattress
Like the Eco Terra mattress, the Avocado Green mattress is an eco-friendly hybrid mattress featuring all-natural latex foam and a support system of individually pocketed support coils.

The recycled innersprings are arranged in three zones that provide targeted pressure relief to the hips, shoulders and lower back.
The Avocado Green Mattress is every bit the equal of the Eco Terra mattress, but the Eco Terra mattress is vastly more affordable.
